10 Things Seen and Heard Inside AFI's Mel Brooks Gala (Photos)

AFI and A-listers from the TV and film comedy community bestowed the godfather of modern comedy, Mel Brooks, with AFI's Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dolby Theatre on Thursday night.
Whether you'll be watching it when it airs on TNT on June 15 or were in the room yourself, here's what you missed or won't see on TV.

AFI regular Judd Apatow is "just like us." He arrived early to mingle and brought his daughter Maude over to meet Sarah Silverman at a centerfield table, admitting that she was nervous to meet the comedienne.
Equally social at AFI's cross industry-mixers is Matthew Weiner, who spent time with fellow AMC showrunner Vince Gilligan and director Jay Roach during the cocktails.

In another corner of the Dolby lobby, Billy Crystal was fiddling with his iPhone and patiently posing for photos, a surprising request from a seen-it-all industry crowd.

Though it may have been a familiar setup for default Oscar host Crystal, the floorplan skewed from usual. Producers knocked out the orchestra pit and stage, transforming it into a talent pit for dinner seating. Where Jack Nicholson's displaced front row would normally be, Brooks presided over a raised head table (above).
Additional guests filled the balconies, escalating the grandeur beyond last year's location on a soundstage on the Sony lot.

Beyond the event's larger footprint, there seemed to be an implied message in the Mel Brooks tribute: comedies usually don't win awards.
By emulating the Oscars template i.e. shutting down two lanes of Hollywood Boulevard, ushering arrivals through the grand staircase, and showcasing Brooks and all those he influenced directly on the big stage - there was a feeling of reparation.
"(AFI) are the cinema police,” Brooks said. “They protect the past and future of movies." Expect to see the previous soundbite in one of AFI's century-spanning video packages for years to come.

The show kicked off with an emphasis on Brooks' multi-genre career, including "The Producers" on Broadway. Martin Short nearly stole the show with a musical cold open. Jay Roach turned around in his seat to clock Brooks’ reaction.

The humor skewed inside at times, jokes ranged from pre-fame meetings at the Big Boy in Burbank to Sarah Silverman's poke at a the less popular 'Mel' (Gibson). Following her comedic victory, Silverman slipped out of her Alexander McQueen heels off as soon as the lights went dark to exit stage right more comfortably.
When Crystal took the stage, he snuck in a plug for his one-man show that returns to Broadway in the fall. "What am I stupid?" he said. "Look who’s here."
And who was there:  Les Moonves posted at the 12 o'clock stage-facing position at his table, with producer Chuck Lorre on his right. In the front row, AFI Board of Trustees Chair Howard Stringer's table included Sony CEO Kaz Hirai. Meanwhile, Audi of America president Scott Keough made the trip west, since the AFI board member had a chunk of the talent pulling up on Hollywood Boulevard in fresh-off-the-truck 2014 Audis.

Fox Studios CEO Jim Gianopolus backed up to Jimmy Kimmel, who spoke from his seat. The presentations were heavy on two themes: jewish power in Hollywood and Brooks' senior status.
"We are going to miss you so much," Jimmy Kimmel said. "Rest in peace, rest in peace my friend." Kimmel followed Conan O'Brien in a one-two punch of late night hosts who both credited Brooks' late night appearances as some of their earliest must-see, stay-up-late TV.
After the show ended and the crowd migrated up to the ballroom on the fifth floor (another Oscar parallel) the affection continued. The 86-year old Brooks filed into an elevator with the masses, grabbing Dreamworks executive Harbor Peoples by the cheek and pinching the new friend like an old one.
"That'll be $5.50 sir," Peoples said.

The ceremony's broadcast moves from Viacom's TV Land to TNT this year.

Robert Redford escorts Chaz Ebert to the stage at The Lot in West Hollywood on Wednesday night.
Ebert accepted the invitation to be the night’s honoree for his support of independent film last fall. When he died in April, it became his first posthumous honor. His wife, Chaz Ebert, attended and accepted in his memory.
While film grants are common, the Institute announced a new "Roger Ebert Scholarship for Film Criticism" at the event, a non-traditional philanthropic target for a crowd of filmmakers.
In recalling her late husband's relationship with Sundance founder Robert Redford, Chaz Ebert continually referenced Roger's relationship with "Bob."
"(Roger) remembered going to the Sundance Film Festival when it was a little event in a Holiday Inn in Utah," Ebert said. "He thought that this work was very special."
"We can’t forget that he also wrote the book, 'I Hated Hated Hated This Movie,' but that came from a level of integrity as well."

Lifetime Working on Lizzie Borden Movie Starring Christina Ricci

After delving into movies dedicated to bad girls such as Jodi Arias and Casey Anthony, Lifetime is going historical with the concept with a movie about Lizzie Borden.
Lifetime is tackling a project about Borden, who was tried but ultimately acquitted of killing her father and stepmother with an ax in the late 1800s.
Christina Ricci will play the role of Borden.

SEO Follies: ‘Walking Dead’ Actress? Well, Sort of, but…

I was eating lunch when the news hit that a “‘Walking Dead’ actress” had been implicated in mailing ricin-tinged letters to President Obama and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Then I clicked on the link: “Shannon who?” I thought.
Having seen every episode of the AMC zombie drama, it was a little jarring. For a supposed “Walking Dead” actress, I wouldn’t know who this woman was if she bit me.
To be fair, almost everyone spun that angle — not just Variety, but the Hollywood Reporter and Huffington Post and virtually any other site interested in traffic.
Welcome to the Search Engine Optimization Follies. See, it’s very simple. Pick a term likely to get a lot of traffic anyway, then use that. Say, George Clooney. I have met George Clooney, even interviewed George Clooney. I’m sure my posts would get more traffic if they were written by George Clooney, or at least offered tantalizing info about him.
But since I really have no excuse to write about George Clooney, it’s kind of gratuitous to use his name.
Which doesn’t stop anyone from trying — in the same way people picked the highest-profile credit associated with Shannon Rogers Richardson, “The Walking Dead,” and ran with that. Never mind that even the show’s former exec producer, Glen Mazzara, apparently had no idea who she is.

Linda Cardellini of Mad Men Engaged to Steven Rodriguez

Apparently engagements are contagious amongst the Mad Men cast.

Just three days after news broke that the show's former actor Jared Harris proposedto Allegra Riggio, one of the show's current stars, Linda Cardellini, has also announced she's a spouse-to-be!

"I was surprised that it was happening at that moment," Cardellini, 37, said on Friday's episode of The View, of fiancĂ©, Steven Rodriguez's proposal. "We were actually with some of the people I love most: my sister, and my cousins and one of my best friends Maura [Tierney] … and we were sitting, and he started getting choked up and then got on his knee. It was very beautiful."

The newly engaged couple welcomed daughter, Lilah-Rose in Feb. 2012.

James McAvoy Does Many Disgusting Things in Filthy Trailer

James McAvoy's latest film is aptly named.
In the international trailer for Filth, based on the novel by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, the usually adorable Scottish actor is a not-that-hot mess as Bruce Robertson, a detective who's more punk than peace officer.
For the course of two minutes and 20 seconds, McAvoy smokes, drinks, does and deals drugs, throws up, gets slapped, masturbates, makes a photocopy of his junk, has rough sex with multiple people, unzips his fly in front of a very young woman, and otherwise offers up his best Bad Lieutenant impression.

No wonder he cries, too. "There's something seriously wrong with me," Bruce laments.
There are also sing-alongs, hallucinatory down-the-rabbit-hole-type sequences and Jim Broadbent as a creepy pill-pusher.
And, we're guessing, a fair amount of nudity. Jamie Bell, Eddie Marsan (who quite literally gets egg on his face at one point) and Imogen Poots are also along for the wild ride.
But if you're not ready to see McAvoy behaving badly, don't worry. The tour de excess, directed by Jon S. Baird, doesn't yet have a release date in the U.S.

Warner Bros. acquires 'Rasputin' pitch with Leonardo DiCaprio attached to star

Leonardo DiCaprio’s next leading role may be Grigori Rasputin, the famed Russian mystic who was an advisor for the Russian Imperial family before he was brutally murdered. But we shouldn’t expect it to be anything like the last time we saw the historical figure on film — as the Christopher Lloyd-voiced animated villain in Anastasia.
The role would be for a film called, fittingly, Rasputin that is being developed with DiCaprio attached to star. Warner Bros. bought the pitch for the project that comes from Jason Hall, screenwriter of upcoming Bradley Cooper movie American Sniper. Deadline first reported the news.

DiCaprio reportedly became interested in the project because Hall uncovered some history about the controversial mystic. The three-time Oscar nominee also was drawn to idea of playing a man “who lost the better part of himself when his brother died, and was capable of kindness but also a ruthlessness,” Deadline reports.

Alyson Hannigan Excitedly Waves at Obama Motorcade While Cuddling Daughter Keeva

Today, the part of the excited constituent was played by Alyson Hannigan.
The How I Met Your Mother star was one of many Los Angeles residents out angling for a glimpse of President Barack Obama's motorcade, which transported the commander in chief from Santa Monica Airport to a private fundraiser at the home of former News Corp. exec Peter Cherninduring his brief trip to the Southland Friday.
So, what better time to get her youngest daughter excited about the federal government?!
PHOTOS: Celeb mothers and daughters
Hannigan, sporting a hoodie and loungewear, carried 1-year-old Keeva outside to wave at the procession, which apparently passed right through their neighborhood.
Though the actress seemed to do most of the waving herself (babies are so blasĂ© about politics these days), the sweet image still made for a mother-daughter moment to remember.
And while Hannigan's show is on hiatus for the summer, hubby Alexis Denisof has a big weekend coming up: The Joss Whedon-directed Much Ado About Nothing, starring Denisof, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion and other Whedonverse faves, opens today.
