Burberry's BAFTA Breakthrough

BURBERRY has teamed up withBAFTA to celebrate emerging British acting talent. The fashion house will spearhead a new project, Breakthrough Brits, with the aim of supporting the UK's "future stars of film, television and games".
Through the initiative, 20 talented newcomers will be selected by a BAFTA panel to take part in a day of career guidance and mentoring from leading industry figureheads at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' headquarters in London, in October. The selected shortlist will be celebrated during an evening reception that same evening at the Burberry Regent Street flagship store, and will also receive a full year of career guidance from specialists in their respective fields and access to BAFTA events.
"We are incredibly excited to be working with Burberry to provide this platform for emerging talent," said Amanda Berry, chief executive of BAFTA. "It's a fantastic opportunity for newcomers to showcase their work on a public stage, and to make the industry connections that are so important to developing their careers both nationally and internationally. We hope that their achievement will inspire others taking their first steps into the film, television and games industries."
Burberry is renowned for its nurturing of up-and-coming talent, most notably through its support of emerging musicians via the Burberry Acoustic initiative. The brand has worked with BAFTA before, providing red carpet attire for nominees at the annual awards ceremony - but this is its first major foray into the film industry.
To apply for the BAFTA Breakthrough Brits programme, submit nominations online at bafta.org. The deadline for applications is July 8 at 10am.

Viktor & Rolf To Skip Show

VIKTOR & ROLF will skip the Paris menswear fashion week schedule this season. The label has opted out of showing its latest men's collection in order to concentrate fully on its upcoming couture show.
It was announced in April that the Dutch design pair, Viktor Horsting and Ralf Snoeren, would make theirreturn to the Paris haute couture schedule in July, following a 13-year absence. Little is yet known about the label's comeback - and it still remains to be seen as to whether they will choose a pared-back presentation or a full-scale catwalk spectacular.
The brand has been a regular fixture on the Paris men's schedule - which this year runs from June 26 to 30 - since 2007. Instead, the designers will unveil their spring 2014 menswear collection via showroom appointments from June 29 to July 7, reports WWD.

Ackermann And Ann Demeulemeester Split

HAIDER ACKERMANN and Ann Demeulemeester have parted from their joint parent company, BVBA 32. Both labels are now independent firms.
Anne Chapelle - the Belgian investor behind BVBA 32 - says that the decision reflects Ackermann's on-going growth. She still has a controlling holding in both brands.
"[Haider Ackermann] has fully matured over the years, becoming a fully stable and independent business on its own," she told WWD. "This is a question of internal optimisation, enabling both brands full freedom to grow."

Luella Returns: The Wait Is Over

LUELLA BARTLEY has made her long-awaited return to fashion. The designer joins Katie Hillier in a new double-act, at the helm of Marc by Marc Jacobs - the first time that anyone other than Jacobs has had creative control over the brand.
While Bartley takes on the role of women's ready-to-wear design director, Hillier has been named creative director at the diffusion label. Jacobs will still be involved in decision-making processes and in an advisory capacity - but will concentrate more on his mainline and commitments with Louis Vuitton.
"I'm very excited to have Katie here in her new role. Her creativity and energy inspires me and everybody she works with," Jacobs told WWD. "She is a great leader and a team player, and a great friend to Robert [Duffy] and me."
Hillier was hired first, and given the freedom to staff her own team. She immediately appointed Bartley - with whom she worked previously on her own ready-to-wear label, Luella. The duo are expected to unveil their first designs for the brand for autumn/winter 2014-15. Expect an emphasis on quality, "interesting" capsule collections and and introduction of new product lines.

Inès de la Fressange’s Fashion Comeback

INÈS DE LA FRESSANGE has returned to her eponymous fashion label. The French model-cum-designer first founded the company in 1991, producing a selection of clothing and accessories.
Former owner François-Louis Vuitton recently sold the company for an undisclosed sum to Calao Finance and The Luxury Fund - a Dubai-based investment firm that also holds shares in Elie Saab. Fabrice Boe, formerly a senior advisor at Calao Finance - and responsible for leading the investment - will become president of the label, reports WWD. He also previously held senior positions at Hermès International and Lancôme.

In recent years, de la Fressange has acted as a brand ambassador for Roger Vivier and L'Oreal; has written a style guide, Parisian Chic; and been involved in the revival of Schiaparelli. The 55-year-old first found fame in the 1980s as a model for Chanel Couture and muse of Karl Lagerfeld.

The RCA Strikes Again

COCOON sleeves and big rounded shoulders - within womenswear, menswear and knitwear - proved to be the trend among the new wave of designers graduating from the Royal College of Art last night, where fashion industry press were given an insight into the minds of the fashion names of the future. But this being an MA course meant that ideas and execution were more slick and commercially aware than those we had seen earlier in the week at the BA Central Saint Martins graduate show where at BA level they - to a degree - remain untamed and raw. That's no bad thing, it's simply part of the melting pot of creativity that is the London fashion scene.
And it didn't mean that there wasn't plenty to see: polished sherbet shade knits in sleek and sculpted silhouettes from Xiao Li; black blingy sequin numbers of square panel constructions from Harriet De Roeper; all-grey and corsage-adorned suiting from Lorna Bilsborrow; big-but-casual fuzzy knits from Camilla Woodman; contemporary safari chic for gentlemen from Ivan Nunes; and blue and black tight glossy dresses from Swarovski-Elements-backed Ana Ogun-Sanya. It was, overall, an especially good night for menswear - Liam Hodges among one of the night's names to know.
"Morris dancing was the start of it," said the Medway-born designer who had previously studied his BA at Westminster. "It's everything I like: punk, Nineties, hip-hop. Kind of the idea of getting ready for a night out," he described of his multi-layered collection of streetwear-historians-meets-arctic-burglars-meets-Shakespeare and a fisherman all at once, a look which surprisingly worked.
"I was going to become a banker in the city but I went to art college and enjoyed it. I never planned anything like this," confessed Hodges post-show. "I think I'm a bit selfish and design for me," he added, which is also no bad thing at all.
This weekend sees the start of Graduate Fashion Week, the next round of student shows before London College of Fashion wraps things up in July.
