THE Queen has received a BAFTA award in recognition of her support and patronage of the British film and television industry throughout her reign. Her Majesty was presented with a golden statue during a ceremony at Windsor Castle last night.
Sir Kenneth Branagh was called upon to present the award, watched on by an audience of 300 - including actors, directors, producers, writers, journalists and designers. Special mention was made for the Queen's starring role alongside Daniel Craig in Danny Boyle's Olympic Opening Ceremony, with BAFTA chairman John Willis describing her as "the most memorable Bond girl yet".
In the short sketch the Queen was seen greeting Craig as James Bond at Buckingham Palace, before appearing to jump out of a helicopter and parachute into the Olympic stadium. It was later revealed that the monarch volunteered hereself to take part in the project.
"Your sensational appearance at the opening ceremony of last year's Olympics was especially memorable," said Branagh in his presentation speech, reports the BBC. "So much so that several of my colleagues here tonight want you to know that should you wish to take it further into the world of British films that they have a number of scripts with them here this evening. I have to warn you, Your Majesty, not all of these films are fully financed."
Carey Mulligan, Eddie Redmayne, Damian Lewis and wife Helen McCrory were among the guests invited to the evening celebrating British film and television, alongside directors George Lucas, Julian Fellowes and Terry Gilliam. The Queen attended the gala in a floral brocade dress and jacket by Angela Kelly worn with Art Deco Cartier brooches, and was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.
"We should be proud of our industry. The people here this evening represent a vast variety of skills and ground breaking innovation, they have entertained and informed a generation and inspired generations to come," said Willis. "I am delighted that this evening has given us the opportunity to give something back. I have the great honour to announce that we are to present Her Majesty with an honorary BAFTA today, in recognition of her outstanding patronage of the film and television industries."
