MARY KATRANTZOU plans to launch a leather-goods line and an interiors range in the future. The designer, renowned for her mind-bending digital prints and sculptured silhouettes, recently collaborated with denim brand Current/Elliott on a capsule collection - a move which she says opened her eyes to potential new avenues to explore. Jeans, she admits, could be another possibility.
Katrantzou is currently preparing for significant brand expansion, including the launch of her debut e-commerce site in the coming weeks. As well as unveiling her debut pre collection next month (for pre-spring/summer 2014), she is also currently recruiting 16 new members of staff.
"Had this season not gone well, we wouldn't be able to recruit, and our staff would be more overworked, and they would leave," she explained. "So that risk always scares you. [I ask myself], am I presenting something that's new, that will excite people? You doubt your longevity."
The Greek-born designer is grateful to her continuing support from NEWGEN - sponsorship on behalf of Topshop and the British Fashion Council - which she says has enabled her to consider growing and expanding season after season.
"Being part of NEWGEN attracts a lot of international buyers and press to your show, and when you're starting it's so important to get your work seen by the right people," she told New York Magazine, before revealing that she has ambitions to become creative director at a big-name fashion house in the future. "Had you asked me even six years ago if I would have my own label, I would have said absolutely not. So you never know."
