THE winners from the 2013 Wool School competition have been named - each of whom will partner with brands including Topshop, Margaret Howell, Christopher Raeburn, Marks & Spencer and Barbour on a wool jumper to be sold nationwide. The contest received over 1,000 entries from fashion, textiles and design students from 12 different collaborating universities.
Each winner was selected by head designers and creatives from each of the respective retailers, and overseen by Nicholas Coleridge, president of Condé Nast International and managing director of Condé Nast Britain; Sheila-Mary Curruthers, knitwear specialist and tutor at Heriot Watt University; and Peter Ackroyd, chair of the International Wool Textile Organisation. Students were asked to design a jumper in keeping with the theme of "knitwear traditions of the British Isles" - while keeping in mind their respective retailer's identity.
"With even more retail partners and students taking part, Wool School 2013 has built on the success of its launch last year and is set to again showcase some of the best new designs in wool," said Coleridge. "Wool is once more a design fibre of choice and we eagerly await this year's finished Wool School collection."
The designs of the winners will be developed , manufactured and sold in stores nationwide to coincide with UK Wool Week, which runs from October 14 to 20. The initiative is part of the Campaign for Wool - of which Prince Charles is a patron - with the support of the Woolmark Company, with the aim of encouraging young designers to engage with natural fibre wool. Five per cent of Wool School jumper sales will go to fashion education programmes across the UK.
